We’ve all had the experience of meeting someone new and going through the process of learning who they are, what they’re about, their intentions, and wonder if they’re trustworthy. So, what do we do?
We wait for them to reveal more of their personality and character, and, with time, we decide whether to form a relationship with them or not. In the book of John, Jesus eliminates that process and reveals exactly who he is so that we can dismiss the curiosity about his purpose and intentions for us.
“The more time I spend with the light,
the more I become a light.” – Rich Wilkerson Jr.
As Pastor Rich Wilkerson Jr. continues the collection of talks on the “I Am” statements of Jesus, we are guided to John 8:12 where Jesus paints a vivid picture of who he is so that we may know him and choose to walk in relationship with him; Jesus tells us, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
This “I Am” statement comes on the heels of the Feast of Tabernacles as Jesus stands in the aftermath of the festival and boldly proclaims that he is the only one that can light up our world – a light that burns on even when the festivities end, a light that guides our path, one that forms our purpose and fills the void in our hearts.
Just as light fills the void of darkness, our hearts find contentment in discovering our purpose through Jesus. In his light, we have life. Jesus makes some pretty audacious claims about his identity, but the great thing about our God is that he then empowers the same qualities in us, telling us that we, too, are the light of the world. Even though Jesus knows our sinful nature, he is still ready to fulfill his purpose in and through us. And, as we come to know our purpose in Christ, we become a light to this dark world.
Jesus, the only light that never burns out, reminds us that when we stray from our purpose in him, our light begins to fade. But, when we walk with him, the source of light, we find fullness of life, purpose, and confidence. Our light burns bright as we stay connected to the love of our Heavenly Father.
Never doubt that God has a plan and a purpose for your life. He knew you before you were born and formed in your mother’s womb. You were designed with intention and meaning. You may feel ordinary, but you were created by an extraordinary God who is calling you to greatness. As you head into a new week, consider how you can reflect the light of Jesus in all you do. Allow others to see a difference in you that prompts them to seek the same.
