Father’s Day weekend conjures up different images for many of us. To some of us, our dads are heroes we aspire to become, to others, they serve as cautionary tales of what not to do and while the rest of us, might have a complicated status in our relationship with our dads at the present time.
But, whether you are a father or play the role of one, miss your dad or got to celebrate with him this weekend, or perhaps, you never got to have a relationship with him, the common tie that binds us is the love our heavenly Father has for us.
This Father’s Day weekend, Pastor Rich Wilkerson, Jr. challenged us with an apt message to Act Like Men from 1 Corinthians 16:13. A verse with powerful implications for the hearts of men and for all of us to be mature in our relationship with God.
We tend to measure ourselves against standards of the past and our peers, but neither serves us well as we are uniquely designed to live up to the potential God has predestined for us. There is more in store for you and 1 Corinthians offers four truths that allow us to live up to our potential in Christ:
SEE MORE THAN YOURSELF
You’ve got to realize there is more to this life than you. You are here to leave a legacy. So live with passion, and be present and engaged in your daily tasks. Don’t be so consumed with your own life that you miss the needs of others.
“True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.” – C.S. Lewis
DO MORE THAN YOU WANT
Just as a coach will ask athletes to push past their comfort zone, as Christians, we are often asked to do more than we want. We can’t truly understand the call of God until we start to obey him and sometimes, that requires us to do things we don’t want to do. But the blessing of walking in this kind of responsibility is that it builds strength, endurance, consistency, and character.
GIVE MORE THAN YOU HAVE
At VOUS, we believe generosity is our privilege – we don’t have to give, we get to give. Everything you give, be it time or finances, you grow in your faith. As your faith grows, you strengthen your walk with the Lord and advance the position he has designed for you on this earth.
“If you want to grow, you have to sow”Rich Wilkerson, Jr.
LOVE MORE THAN YOU FEEL
Love is not a feeling, love is a choice. Loving those around you takes work, and it sometimes leaves a mark. We don’t always feel like being loving, but that’s when we have to tap into the heart of our Father and ask him to fill us with his love for those around us.
As you head into a new week, how can you step up and lead in the role you’re in? Ask that God will reveal where you need to look beyond yourself so you can impact those around you. In everything you do, work as though you’re working for the Lord!
