“But say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.
Luke 7:7–10

Luke tells us that when Jesus heard the centurion’s message, Jesus was amazed. Did you catch that? Jesus—the second person in the holy Trinity, the God-man, the Word of Life, the one by whom and for whom all things were made—was amazed. Amazed! Amazed at what?

Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.

“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.

Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.
Mark 6:1–6

This is an alarming story. Jesus is in his hometown, where you would think he will be welcomed with love and gladness. But Jesus isn’t celebrated at all. He is barely tolerated. The people of the town are skeptical of his ministry. They criticize him. They mock his past and assume they know all there is to know about him. And Jesus was amazed at their lack of faith.

In the Scripture, two things amaze Jesus:

  • Great faith.
  • Lack of faith.

When Jesus looks at your life, what does he see? Great faith? Or no faith at all?

Does your life amaze Jesus?
